Defra discussion paper on food security
Ensuring the UK’s Food Security in a Changing World www.defra.gov.uk/foodrin/foodstrategy/documents/Ensuring-UK-Food-Security-in-a-changing-world-170708.pdf

The DEFRA discussion paper seeks to contribute to that debate on changing circumstances by:

  • describing the trends that have led to the current global
  • setting out the challenges that will continue to impact the food chain; and
  • discussing whether the UK food supply chain is sufficiently resilient to withstand short term shocks and sufficiently robust to face long term challenges.
DEFRA has set up an e-mail address: foodmatters.security@defra.gsi.gov.uk to act as a portal for views on the UK’s food security.

The views they receive on this discussion document and from a series of expert workshops and stakeholder events that we plan to hold will inform a more detailed statement of DEFRA's food security policy, that will be published later in the year. This will help start the process of engagement on a key issue identified in Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century: www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/strategy/work_areas/food_policy.aspx
