Welcome

With just over 4 months to go until Farmhouse Breakfast Week 2008 (January 20th - 26th 2008), plans for the ninth annual campaign organised by the Home-Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) are well underway. With the theme 'A Great Start!', HGCA will be encouraging everyone to wake up to a balanced breakfast as part of a healthy and active lifestyle and making the most of the fantastic regional produce from around the UK.

With breakfast firmly on the menu in January 2008 there is no better time to get involved! Visit www.farmhousebreakfast.com or call 020 7520 3968 to find out more about the nation's most popular breakfast celebration!

Campaign Update

Both long term supporters and those new to Farmhouse Breakfast have already made plans for their activities and events in January. The Royal Highland Education Trust is holding a schools poster competition in association with Tesco Scotland, and other retailers including ASDA are backing the campaign with a range of activities. The NFU is supporting the campaign across the country and is working with HGCA on an event to rival the 2007 porridge attempt! The Regional Food Groups too are planning a wide variety of activities to highlight the range and quality of regional breakfast foods available.

Do keep us up-to-date with your events. It would be great to beat last year's event total of over 1,500!

HGCA will be highlighting events to local and national media via the website, so be sure to register your event. We can send you a free pack of promotional material including recipe leaflets, posters and stickers, along with helpful information on organising and running events and dealing with the press. Contact HGCA as soon as possible to secure yours!

Get a Breakfast Buddy

Many people enjoy breakfast but sometimes struggle to motivate themselves to eat the most important meal of the day. Yet as studies show a healthy breakfast can help with concentration and energy levels, this is definitely a meal not to be missed. So, for 2008 HGCA is launching the 'Breakfast Buddy Club'. Great for companies large and small, schools and colleges and individuals, this campaign can really help and encourage those reluctant breakfast eaters to have 'A Great Start!' to their day.

HGCA can supply posters and recipes books to help you launch your 'Breakfast Buddy Club'. For further information on setting up a 'Breakfast Buddy Club' email nutrition@hgca.com.

Best Breakfasts

With more and more people dining out for breakfast, HGCA is once again encouraging customers and establishments alike to nominate their favourite places to eat breakfast. Whether it's your local café, restaurant, work canteen or pub, we want to put them on the map!

The interactive website map is open to cafes, restaurants, B&B's and hotels across the United Kingdom. The easy to use map allows everyone to search the site by region, or establishment type. Why not find somewhere new for the whole family to enjoy a breakfast brunch at the weekend, or maybe set up a business breakfast meeting.

Let us know why the breakfast on offer is such 'A Great Start' to the day! It might be the range of delicious regional products served or the regionally inspired recipes.

To recommend your favourite breakfast venue or nominate your own establishment email nutrition@hgca.com or register online.

Breakfast Ideas

To make sure you have a great start to the day, try one of these quick and easy breakfast ideas. Recipes and /images are available to download from the campaign website, and are also available in the supporting recipe booklet.

Why not try a bowl of porridge with a twist. Porridge is a great breakfast for any time of the year and is now seen as the most fashionable breakfast to be seen eating! Choose the topping of your choice for an energy packed start to the day. Experiment at breakfast with some new, delicious porridge toppings:

    - Toasted nuts and seeds with golden syrup
    - Bananas and maple syrup
    - Stewed fruits

Jane Griffin, Farmhouse Breakfast Week's dietician to the sporting stars, says porridge is a great breakfast before a morning run. Paula Radcliffe is a big fan of porridge and this oaty breakfast is a perfect choice for her because it provides a long, slow release of energy to help keep her going during a two hour marathon. "A nice simple breakfast of porridge made with low fat milk, topped with honey is perfect for Paula. It's quick and easy to make and has a lovely calming influence too - just what she needs before preparing mentally for a marathon".
