Northamptonshire Farmhouse Breakfast Week 2008

30th January 2008

Northampton Town Football Club

Northamptonshire members held a farmhouse breakfast event at the Study Centre at the Northampton Town Football Club, Sixfields, Northampton. The Study Centre is an educational facility funded by the DfES, Northants County Council and the Football Club.

Three local primary schools were invited to bring in groups of children and a small group of four foster children ended the day. We served bacon and sausage rolls, or eggs, apple juice and Cox's apples. The food items were all sourced locally, the bacon from Farmhouse Meats in Northampton and sausages were supplied by David Mumford Butcher of Culworth. The bread rolls were from Adams Bakery in Northampton. The apples were given by Mr Paul Duncombe, a local Wholesaler and the free-range eggs by one of our WFU members, Mrs Julia Hawes. Teachers were provided with the HGCA Teacher Packs and information on the 'Farming in the Classroom' scheme. Members talked to the children about the importance of eating a good breakfast and took along their Farming in the Classroom displays.

They have had a lot of positive feedback from the schools and comments:

"On behalf of all of the pupils and staff I would like to thank you for inviting us to the Farmhouse Breakfast session today. It was lovely for the Athletics team to have such an appropriate treat. The bus was buzzing on the way back. The children had found out such a lot of new information."

"Please could you pass on my thanks to the wonderful farmers. We all thoroughly enjoyed hearing about their farms. The delicious food was very much appreciated also! I hope that it will help to make the children think a bit more about where their food comes from as well as fuelling their extra fast running on Friday!"

'I thought the displays were wicked!'
'I really enjoyed the food - it was really nice.'
'We enjoyed learning about the little piggies!'
'I enjoyed eating the bacon and sausage rolls.'
'We learnt what the animals ate.'
'We learnt that cows' milk goes into chocolate.'

"The children had a great morning. They found the talk very interesting and really enjoyed tasting the food!"
