Lincolnshire Quality meat scheme scoops national award - July 2008
Lincolnshire Quality Beef, Lamb and Pork won a national award last week, gaining recognition for the excellent work they have completed over the past 11 years. The "Northern Foods Rural Action Award" recognises and rewards companies who address community issues and help create and maintain a vibrant, sustainable rural economy and is part of the Business in the Community scheme. In the wake of the BSE crisis a group of Lincolnshire farmers recognised the social demand for assurance that the meat consumers were purchasing was looked after correctly. The Hungry Stockman signposts consumers to meat that is completely traceable to the farm where the meat has been reared. It also offers assurance that the animals have been well treated and only travelled a short distance to the abattoir, therefore reducing food miles. Customers of the brand consistently comment on the good taste and quality of the meat.

Kettleby Foods - 26th September 2007
12 members of WFU from both Lincolnhsire and Northamptonshire visited Kettleby Foods in Melton Mowbray on the 26th September to learn about their production of the Tesco Finest selection. They were hosted by the head chef who oversees product development. Kettleby Foods is part of the Samworth Group of Companies. Nearly all the products produced at the factory are potato based and the potatoes are provided ready peeled by a company based in Lincolnshire. Kettleby Foods cooks and mashes the potatoes before incorporating them into the "Finest" selection.

After lunch in a deli in Long Clawson, we enjoyed a very interesting tour of the factory followed by a tasting session in the kitchen. We were amazed at the variety of ingredients and dishes produced. Systems have to be accurately controlled in order to guaruntee no wastage and ensure profits.

Lincolnshire Sausages - 5th April 2006
Past president and Lincolnshire member, Janet Godfrey, has been appointed chairman of the steering group which has been set up to guide the Lincolnshire Sausage through the process of applying for Protected Geographical Indication. Over the past few months the campaign to "Save Our Sausage" has been growing across the county. There is huge public support for the process and the aim is to get as many sausage makers on board as possible so that the application can be made with their support.

There are several issues that first need to be resolved:

  • The exact recipe or specification for the Lincolnshire Sausage
  • The historic basis for the application
  • The control or policing of the system
  • Who pays?
The Lincolnshire Sausage Association is attempting to address these issues. If anyone is interested in supporting the application or can help in any way, please contact Janet Godfrey via the WFU or Graham Booth on 01775 766161. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has written evidence of the historic background to Lincolnshire Sausages.

The Campaign has been supported by local MPs and Lincolnshire Pride magazine.

Biodiesel plant being built at Immingham - 10th December 2005
Building work has started on a £13.5m Greenergy Biofuels Ltd biodiesel production plant at Immingham, Humberside. It will initially supply 100,000 tonnes of biodiesel per annum and positioned to service the fast growing UK and European biofuels markets. Construction is due to be completed in autumn 2006. Greenergy confirmed that it expects to source over 150,000 tonnes per annum of UK grown rapeseed as feedstock for the plant. The rapeseed is being grown by more than 1,000 farmers under Greenergy's 'Field to Forecourt' contract. Cargill has been appointed to manage the supply of rapeseed grown under the Field to Forecourt contract and will work alongside Frontier Agriculture. Grainfarmers, G Williams and Co (Grain), J Dawson and Sons and Refa are also offering Field to Forecourt contracts to ensure adequate and timely supply of feedstock and it is hoped that other local seed merchants will take the opportunity join the Feed to Forecourt supply chain prior to start up of the project. Greenergy's biodiesel plant is ideally situated to sell its output into these refineries and also to source its feedstock from the nationally important farming district that surrounds the port. Greenergy clients include supermarkets, oil majors, bus companies, hauliers, resellers and distributors and fleet end users with clients including BAA, the Metropolitan Police, London Underground, TDG, Eddie Stobart, Stagecoach, Mercedes Benz, Sainsbury, Shell, Conoco-Phillips, Tesco, Transco and a wide variety of Local Councils and UK Government departments.

The November 2005 issue of Rural Matters with information on Modernising Rural Delivery in Yorkshire and The Humber is now available on the Framework website at www.goyh.gov.uk.

East Lindsey Food for Health Strategy
The East Lindsey Local Strategic Partnership has recently produced an "East Lindsey Food for Health Strategy". The strategy can be seen at: www.e-lindsey.gov.uk/health/food-health-strategy.cfm
A Group known a FEAST (Food in East Lindsey) not only aims to protect and improve the health and well-being of the local community but also assist the further development of local food. If opportunities exist in East Lindsey to supply local food perhaps this group and strategy could help link farmers with the local supply base. Worth a look to see if you can spot an opportunity!

Associated British Ports - 21st September 2005
Lincolnshire WFU members enjoyed an interesting visit to Immingham Docks as guests of Associated British Ports on the 21st September. In today's climate of high security, some of the members were able to return to areas that have not been open to the public for years. One member reminisced about how she used to cycle along these areas as a child!

Members learnt about the vast amount of 'Agribulks' shipped in and out of Immingham port. Gleadell Agriculture Ltd is the port's sole grain shipper and has invested £1.25 million in a new ship loader for its grain export operation. The conveyor was in place for the 2002 harvest and loads ships of up to 28,000 tonnes at the rate of 1,200 tonnes an hour over a three day period. Totally enclosed, it meets all the latest stringent environmental controls, including dust suppression. The sole grain shipper in the port exports up to a million tonnes of grain through the port. The product is primarily wheat but also includes barley, rapeseed, linseed, peas, beans and oats. Markets a mainly in the EU and products are for human consumption as well as for animal feed.

Immingham is also home to two of the UK's largest animal feed importers. Imports are mainly from South America, the Far East and Europe and the commodities are mainly feedstuffs for cattle, pigs, poultry and pets. Up to 25 products are imported. Dutch company, Cefetra, regularly imports 20,000 tonne cargoes of soya and palm kernals through the port.

Norwegian fertiliser giants, Hydro Agri, have had a major presence at Immingham for over 50 years, their dockside factory producing over 600,000 tones of ammonia based fertiliser annually. However, in the summer of 2000, overcapacity forced the company to cease production at Immingham. The faciltiy now imports product in bulk from it's other European manufacturing units for bagging and blending prior to distribution to farms throughout the East of the UK. ABP took over the operating of the facility on behalf of Hydro Agri and now rovide stevedoring, bagging, warehousing and loading facilities to the company. They have provided a 100 tonne capacity mobile harbour crane on the quayside. ABP's Immingham Bulk Park continues to handle up to 200,000 tonnes of processed product each year. Fertiliser tonnages are supplemented by imports of pumice and gypsum.

The evening ended with members enjoying a delicious meal at Caistor Wine Bar.

Lincolnshire Show 22nd and 23rd June, 2005

Lincolnshire members braved the heat to put on a fine display of Lincolnshire produce for visitors to the Food Stands at this year's Lincolnshire Show. The fine weather meant that attendance was way up on last year's rainy show and thousands of visitors passed through the fantastic displays of locally produced food.

Janet Godfrey, chairman of the Lincolnshire Forum for Agriculture and Horticulture in front of the display of Select Lincolnshire produce outside the NFU stand. The Forum has invested in the development of a 'Lincolnshire brand' to put Lincolnshire on the consumers' map of places to find excellent quality food. The demonstration at the show was intended to persuade producers to sign up to the use of the brand.

Pork Pies with Jill - 11th May 2005

Super demonstration by Jill Bourne on pork pie making - well that was what Jill called it but while it did contain pork it contained all sorts of other things - cointreau, apricots, prunes bacon, breadcrumbs (to soak up the juice instead of jelly) and the list of 'optional ingredients' was mouth-watering. We also had the opportunity to taste one made earlier which had orange, and other goodies in. If you were not there you missed a treat and many thanks to Jill who shared her secrets with us - I can see lots of scrumptious pork pies being made judging by the recipes handed out.

The LincFarms Project - 2nd April 2005

The retiring High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, Mr Charles Welby, launched the LincFarms project on Friday as his final official duty. The theme of the project is "Connecting with the Countryside" and is aimed at giving farm access to all - on Lincolnshire farms.

The aim of the project is for a cross section of school and community groups, with a focus on the disadvantaged, to gain an insight into the farming world and thus gain a better understanding of food production, sustainable land use and healthy lifestyles. Trafalgar Weekend October 21 - 23
A celebration of food and farming in Britain. WFU are asking members to hold a lunch or dinner to show our support for the event. The organisers are asking if we could also light a beacon / bonfire as they would like to make a chain across Britain. All proceeds to go to RABI and The Seafarers Assoc. Information packs are to be released in April and I will keep you informed.

New Members If anyone has a potential new member, could you please let me know. I have some "new member" forms and it would be nice to send a welcome letter to new members from the branch. Don't forget, we now have an "under 30's" rate (first year only £15.00)
Please feel free to bring a friend to any event, and if you could persuade them to join, that would be excellent!!

Members Worknet
Do you have any friends / relatives who have farmshops, B & B's, local produce, livestock etc, which they would like to advertise nationally. Well, they could join WFU and, through Members Worknet, have national advertising for the price of their subscription. Only £34.50 per annum for national advertising (and they get the VAT back) What an exceptional offer!
Don't forget to advertise your business as well.

If you have got this far, I expect you have read the rest!! So, Thanks for your time. Minty

Branch Visit Waitrose - 9 February 2005

Members of the Lincolnshire branch visited the new Waitrose store at Lincoln on Wednesday evening.

Members were impressed by the vast quantity of excellent quality British produce on sale and the store's systems of traceability. However it was a shame to note that imported Tate & Lyle sugar is their preferred sugar, rather than the British Silver Sp[oon variety, much of which is produced locally. Members were also disappointed not to find more local Lincolnshire produce labelled, although we were sure it was there somewhere!

Members enjoy Waitrose's British wine, Lincolnshire Poacher cheese and Cox and russet apples.
