About the Cheshire Branch
The Cheshire branch of the WFU is a vibrant bunch of girls, all committed to doing our best for British agriculture. Some of us are farmers, some are married to farmers and some simply love the countryside and care about what happens there. We range in age from 27 to, well, over 50 anyway - all are welcome and it's a good place to turn to if you are past YFC age! Many members have their own businesses or have retired from running them, meaning that it is a great place to network and meet some new friends.

All of this while at the same time knowing that you are in a great position to find out about and influence issues affecting the countryside all around you. There are opportunities to get involved in talking to school children, local and national promotional events, responding to Government consultations and a wide variety of socials, from fly fishing to cheese and wine evenings. Something for any Cheshire woman interested in British farming and the countryside!

The Cow to Cone Experience
For the past 2 years, members of Cheshire WFU have volunteered their time to talk to school children visiting the Cow to Cone Experience at the Cheshire Farm Ice Cream in Tattenhall, Cheshire. A room at the farm has been designed to be a lively and engaging facility in which children can learn all about how their food is grown. The children learn from members with first hand experience of farming about:

  • the seasonality of food and the growing year, from sowing to harvesting
  • the links between different farm animals and their dependency on each other throughout their life cycles
  • where milk comes from, how a cow is milked and how the milk is processed into different (and very tasty!) products
The Centre has the advantage of being sited near to residential outdoor pursuits centres and is able to provide an added attraction for visiting pupils from schools around the country to see.

Schools wishing to visit the centre should first make a booking and a guide will be provided on request.

Since it opened, over 3,000 children have been guided through the centre and helped to understand the way in which farming, particularly dairying, enhances the British countryside. In Cheshire, we have realised that we need to make the effort to ensure that members' knowledge of the countryside is passed onto the next generation; there is no guarantee that this happens automatically anymore. We hope that educating children about food and the way in which it is produced will lead more people to appreciate the importance of caring for the environment.

The centre is funded by a post foot and mouth rural recovery grant and Leader+ and is an example that could be used as a model in other county areas.

May 2006 - girl's night out at the Royal Oak, Worleston. We welcomed new members, discussed our social plans for the rest of the summer, had a good giggle at Rosemary winning a night out with the guitarist in the raffle… and most importantly enjoyed some great food and conversation.

April 2006 - a wonderful lunch was arranged for members, friends and partners at Brookfield Golf Club with special guests WFU President Ionwen Lewis and very funny speaker and Black Country resident Gabriella. A good time was had by all, with a small profit made for the branch. In fact, so much fun was had that Ionwen forgot the time and so our thanks go to Derek Hughes for rushing her to Crewe station at short notice!

March 2006 - as if someone was suggesting that we weren't making enough effort over our appearances, a make-up and aromatherapy evening was hosted by Barbara Hughes. The effect of a make over on Barbara was nothing short of miraculous, although husband Derek was strangely oblivious to the transformation. It's no wonder we don't make the effort…

January 2006 - the Annual Big Breakfast was held at Jubilee Hall, Malpas. Members served cooked breakfasts made entirely from local ingredients to 150 local people. A few eggs were dropped, but the event was a success all round! February 2006 - the Cheshire WFU AGM was held at Cheshire Farm Ice Cream. Various new posts were elected and the chairman and secretary were thanked for their continuing hard work.

November 2005 - a cheese and wine evening at the very hospitable Brookfield Gold Club, celebrating the Best of British Cheese.

October 2005 - in celebration of Trafalgar Day, we held a "Lady Hamilton's Masked Ball" at Willington Hall. A hugely successful evening, over £1000 was raised for charity.

September 2005 - early in the month we had a beautiful and interesting farm walk near Rhuabon, and towards the end of the month we also attended the Nantwich Food Festival, promoting cheese and healthy living.

August 2005 - this month, members visited a local farm that has diversified into offering fly fishing lessons. Well done Sandy on catching your own tea!

June 2005 - members attended the Cheshire Show to promote British Cheese. A selection of widely available cheeses was available for free sampling by the visitors, and we were lucky enough to have tubs of Snugbury's ice cream to sell and yoghurt from the Tiresford herd of Guernseys next door. Delicious!

May 2005 - we visited member Miriam William's dairy farm, where Miriam and daughter Sheila have diversified by opening a hat shop, Kinderton Hat Studio. A talk on how the business was founded was followed by a fun session trying on all the wonderful hats.

April 2005 - A very informative talk by DEFRA on the new Entry Level Scheme and Single Farm Payment.

March 2005 - 3 members went to Haydock Park for the Schools and Countryside Event. Over 2000 children attended our talks on cereals and where their food comes from - an exhausting experience but very worthwhile!

Cheshire celebrated Farmhouse Breakfast Day on 30th January by cooking brunch for the elderly at the Jubilee Hall, Malpas in conjunction with Age Concern. Mornflake Oats provided free samples for them to take home.

Strawberry Day

Cheshire have now completed their Strawberry promotion. We had a very busy time at the Cheshire Show, a two day event where we gave out strawberries and made a display of British Strawberries alongside a table with the Great British Breakfast.
