Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire is the home county of the Bramley apple and this year is celebrating the 200th anniversary of this versatile universally popular fruit, including a new stained glass window in Southwell Minster, especially commissioned in its honour. Events can be found at www.southwellcouncil.com/events/view-36
The big farming event this year is the Southwell Ploughing Match to be held on Saturday,September 26th at Hall Farm Linby. www.southwellploughingmatch.co.uk
Claire Hardstaff is WFU Nottinghamshire treasurer and this year she and her husband, Tim have extended the concept of farming in the classroom by offering the local school an on-going programme of growing vegetables in a field plot adjacent to  Linby school. Starting in April with planting potatoes this carried on with planting carrots, onions, leeks and lettuce.  Over the Spring and Summer, Tim and Claire visited the school and the children took part in the husbandry operations. Claire has received many letters from the children expressing their interest in the project. The staff have been supportive too.
This will culminate in a display of the produce from the plot at the Ploughing Match in September.
Breakfast Benefits-this is the title of the forthcoming Farmhouse Breakfast week to be held in January 2010, material for this campaign including recipes can be viewed at  www.hgca.com
