MID ANGLIA BRANCH NEWS

Contact Edna Philp - ednaphilp@msn.com

Mid-Anglia Branch of the WFU for the 4th year have gone to St Benedicts College, Colchester with ideas for Farmhouse Breakfast Week and this year because Colchester is a garrison town, we suggested inviting the army.

I contacted the garrison and they sent six of their Army Recruitment Team &  two from another regiment (Chefs). I also invited two Korean veterans, the Mayor & Mayoress of Colchester, the EADT & Gazette Essex radio & the army sent their own photographer, so we were well supported!

The whole class were present on this occasion and started by cooking pancakes with local honey or raspberries, local fruit juice.  Followed by bacon in a bun tin with an (local) egg in the centre, baked in the oven and served with toast soldiers (an idea from a budding chef in the class) - soldiers for soldiers!  Finally muffins with sunflower seeds etc, thinking soldiers would need to have food on the run.

Once everyone had enjoyed their brunch I explained the concept of Farmhouse Breakfast Week sponsored by HGCA and hoping more people would appreciate how important it was to start the day with a good breakfast.  Relaying the information from the HGCA re their survey & Trees /Oats Sheep/Bacon.

Next the chef from the army explained about the importance of their breakfast & answered questions from the pupils.  Then it was the turn of the Korean veteran who had a very different experience as it was rationing when he was in the army.  They were allowed 1/7th of an egg each and often dried at that!

The Mayor said a few words & Edna finalised the proceedings by thanking all concerned, accentuating the importance of a good breakfast.  We all enjoyed the experience and trust we impressed the importance of breakfast.
