WFU at the Kent County Show, 16th ~ 18th July 2010

Kent branch have just had a very successful 3 days [16/17/18th July] at the Kent County Show where we have had a stand in the "Why Farming Matters in Kent " marquee, where over 86,000 people attended the show.

We were fortunate that a lot of members gave up time to help on the stand which allowed us to make contact with a large number of people. We answered questions about farming and were also able to promote our very successful of Farming in the Classrooom presentations.

We also emphasised the WFU campaign of "Look for Local" and gave away  free locally produced cherries as an example of freshness and quality.

During the show WFU Kent actively supported the new "Why Farming Matters in Kent" initiative by assisting in the promotion of this  inititiative which launched on the first day of the show.

We also gained some new members.

The WFU recently participated in "The Living Land" event at the Kent County Showground on 6th May 2010. Tish Neaves, Mauren Friday, Elizabeth Browning and Caroline Pinchbeck (shown above) are among those that ran the stall to allow any of the 3000 children that attended from the 58 participating Kent schools to make apple juice.

As you are aware 2009 is the 30th anniversary of the WFU. We are intending to mark this with a celebration at the Farmers Club, London on the 20th October 2009. The Farmers Club was the place where the first AGM of the WFU took place and so the CEC felt it was the ideal venue to celebrate this landmark. There are some interesting speakers and it is bound to be a very enjoyable day, so do please come along and support the event.

Whilst writing I would like to say a big 'thank you' to those of you who came along to the Kent County Show and helped on the stand. We were very well represented for the whole 3 days of the show. We had a very good position in the “Why Farming Matters“ Marquee, which attracted a lot of visitors. Leaflets for Maureen Friday’s brilliant “Farming In the Classroom“ talks were readily taken up and she is already very booked. If any of you would like to come along to one of these talks, please do let me know .It is wonderful to see how much the children enjoy it and how much they learn. With the present adverse publicity about visiting farms, these talks will be an even more important link. We also had a stand at the East Kent Ploughing match on Saturday.

Thanks to all who helped with that too and especially to Juliet Fenton who allowed us to “squat” on the side of her Trade Stand.

Congratulations to her too, as her stand [Silcocks]  won the Best Trade Stand trophy for the second year running.

Finally I would be grateful if you could let me know if you have an email address. I can be contacted by email at tishneaves@hotmail.co.uk or by telephone on 01795890704 /07875356294.

Kind Regards
