Glamorgan WFU Report
The AGM in January was followed by a Sugar Craft demonstration by Mwyfanwy Edwards, of Artisan Cakes, a local farmer’s wife, who creates beautiful bespoke cakes for every occasion.
Sally and Nicola attended a Breakfast Meeting at the Welsh Assembly organised by the Farmers Union of Wales, where they were able to speak with Assembly members.
Eira our Secretary was very busy during Breakfast Week organising a WFU team, who provided breakfasts at an Environmental Group Meeting and two schools.
In February we were addressed by Treorcy Butcher, Mr Roger Williams who spoke about the changes that his business has had to adapt to over the last 50 years, from the times when the coal mines were working to now with a nearby supermarket.
Sally, Nicola, Kath, Lynette and Helen enjoyed attending the Annual WFU Conference at Cirencester.
In April one of our founder members, Dilwyn Phillips kindly instructed members on the procedure for responding to consultation papers. A time consuming task but our comments on the welfare of animals at slaughter were returned and it was generally agreed that meetings must be held to respond to any further consultation papers sent our way.
We had a stand at the launch of Bridgend County Borough Food and Nutrition Plan. Eira, Julie and Kath used this opportunity to inform groups concerned with nutrition and health, in an area considered to be amongst the most deprived in Europe, about farming in the classroom.
Eira, Kath, Helen and Julie also attended a Farming Connect Event ‘The Future of Farming’ at a Cowbridge farm that has a forestry business. We once again had a stand and handed out some membership forms. As this was a day time event, a sociable meal out followed.
